do you need the gameshark VMU?

Doest he gameshark VMU do anything special? Or come pre-loaded with anything useful? Or is it basically identical to any other memory card? The codes and software are all on the CD, right?

I don't have any experience with it, but from what I've heard there's something special about it that the software can detect. I've heard of a hacked version floating around that uses a normal VMU.

I'm curious because the vast majority of the DC gamesharks up on e-bay don't include the special VMU, but they still go for decent prices.
